The foundation of our practice in shipping and commodities law.
Shipping law is the origin of Zaiwalla & Co. For more than four decades, we have acted in maritime and trade disputes that have contributed to the development of English commercial law. Our work includes matters reported in the English Law Reports, including The La Pintada, the leading authority on compound interest in maritime claims.
We advise shipowners, charterers, P&I Clubs, marine insurers, brokers and trading houses in disputes arising from charterparties, bills of lading, marine insurance, shipbuilding contracts and regulatory obligations. The firm regularly acts in LMAA arbitrations and in proceedings before the Commercial Court, including challenges to arbitration awards under the Arbitration Act 1996.
Our commodities practice is equally established. We represent international trading houses and state-linked entities in GAFTA arbitrations and related High Court proceedings involving soft commodities, letters of credit and contractual termination disputes. Many of our matters involve cross-border counterparties and English law sale contracts forming the backbone of global trade.
Global trade disputes under English law
Our marine and commodities work connects counterparties across India, the Middle East, Europe and Asia, where English law governs charterparties, sale contracts and financing arrangements. We act in disputes seated in London and in related enforcement proceedings abroad.
